Beorc

“The Poplar bears no fruit; yet without seed it brings forth suckers, for it is generated from its leaves. Splendid are its branches and gloriously adorned its lofty crown which reaches to the skies”. Anglo-Saxon Rune poem

• Elder Futhark equivalent: Berkana

• Younger Futhork equivalent: Bjarkan

• Phonetic value: B

Whilst Dickins chose to translate this Rune as Poplar, and then proceeded to give it attributes more akin to willow, this Rune actually translates as Birch. This is a Rune of fertility, the fullness of possibility, fecundity and growth in the inner world.

In Norse society it was, and apparently still is, custom for a bride and groom to beat each other with birch twigs to ensure fertility. This Rune is often used in fertility spells.

As Birch however, Beorc represents the overzealous desire to procreate. The birch has catkins which fill the air with both pollen and seed, most of which will never find the female catkins or a place to be planted where they can grow. In this respect it is like sperm; although millions are released, only one will be successful.

The B shape is that of a breast and a pregnant belly, showing its associations with human fertility, with growth in the inner world, the seed resting in the soil awaiting spring.

So Beorc is a Rune both of being ready to receive the seed, and of the successful seed; a Rune that reminds us to be aware of where our energy goes, and to check to see if we are wasting our energy. But it is also a Rune that guarantees successful fertility.
